Richards Bay Mining (Pty) Ltd mines the heavy mineral sands in the nearby coastal dunes; and Richards Bay Titanium (Pty) Ltd smelts ilmenite to produce titanium dioxide feedstock and pig iron.
Ninety-five per cent of RBM's 1,9 million tons of product produced annually is exported, with zircon and rutile separated and sold in their mineral form.
Titania slag and pig iron are the bulk of the business and the process
whereby ilmenite is beneficiated is of such significance, that it ensures RBM's place as a leading world producer. The combined output of the four furnaces is some one million tons of slag and 525 000 tons of iron per annum.
